Supporting Local Schools: Our Grow Your Own Gardening Initiative

At Big Red, we believe that some of life’s most important lessons happen outside the classroom. That’s why we’re incredibly proud of our partnership with 15 local primary schools, where we’ve been donating ‘Grow Your Own’ gardening kits to help nurture the next generation of green-fingered enthusiasts.

Planting Seeds of Knowledge

Over the last few years, our gardening initiative has blossomed into something truly special. Each kit we provide gives children the opportunity to experience the joy and wonder of growing their own plants from seed to harvest. There’s something magical about watching a child’s face light up when they see the first green shoots poking through the soil – a moment of pure discovery that simply can’t be replicated by looking at a textbook.

“Helping encourage young children to become more sustainable and understand the benefits of spending more time in the outdoors” is at the heart of this initiative. In a world where screens often dominate children’s attention, we’re passionate about getting little hands dirty and young minds engaged with the natural world around them.

More Than Just Gardening

While the practical skills of gardening are valuable in themselves, our initiative cultivates so much more. Children learn patience as they water their seedlings daily, responsibility as they ensure their plants get the care they need, and resilience when things don’t go exactly to plan (as any gardener knows all too well!).

These kits also offer a wonderful opportunity for teachers to bring science lessons to life, turning abstract concepts about plant growth, photosynthesis and ecosystems into tangible, hands-on experiences that children can touch, smell and even taste when harvest time comes around.

The Big Red Bear’s Special Deliveries

Of course, no school donation would be complete without a visit from our beloved mascot, the Big Red Bear! The children always look forward to seeing him arrive with the gardening kits in tow, creating an atmosphere of excitement that makes the whole experience even more memorable.

These visits have become a highlight in the school calendar, with teachers often telling us how pupils ask weeks in advance when the Big Red Bear might be coming back. It’s this combination of practical resources and joyful engagement that makes our school partnerships so successful.

Growing Together

The beauty of our gardening initiative is that it continues to grow and evolve. What began as a simple donation programme has flourished into a long-term relationship with schools across our community. We regularly receive updates, photos and even handmade thank-you cards showing us the progress of school gardens and allotments that started with our kits.

Looking ahead, we have exciting plans to expand this initiative further. We’re exploring workshops, competitions, and even a potential harvest festival to celebrate the achievements of our young gardeners. The seeds we’re planting today – both literally and figuratively – will continue to bear fruit for years to come.

As one headteacher recently told us, “You’re not just helping our pupils grow plants; you’re helping them grow as people.” We couldn’t ask for a better outcome than that.
